Most Podcasters Start TOO Broad
I’m guilty of this too. When launching a brand new podcast, it will be beneficial to begin by narrowing your focus as much as possible. Use the built in community within your niche focus as way to quickly attract an audience. The first podcast I launched was a general sports podcast, which was wrong to do on so many levels. One, no one’s going to find our show this way. Two, we’re not ESPN, our opinion of sports has little to no influence on the sports world. It wasn’t until I decided to focus on one single sports team that I was able to build a community with loyal engaged listeners. Narrow your focus as much as you can and you will see quicker results.
Working the Dials with Wayne Henderson of MediaVoiceOvers.com
This is back to back episodes where I’ve had the pleasure of visiting with podcasters who have extensive backgrounds in radio. In this episode Wayne Henderson stops by. You may know Wayne as the person behind such podcasts as The Packers Fan Podcast, Fringe, Under the Dome Radio Podcast and the Featured STARTER of the month, Resurrection Revealed podcast. Wayne got his start in radio back in California after graduating from Fullerton College.
“Those were actually great times of course that was before digital audio and digital editing,” says Henderson. “At that time for radio broadcasting school it was still the classic reel to reel tapes, get out an actual razor blade, cut and actually splice and hope that it sounds good. It was the first time in my life that I ever had a straight 4.0 through college.”
Before finishing up the program at Fullerton College, Wayne got his first break in the radio biz at a country station in Palm Springs, CA. The love for radio though started when Wayne was 11-years old. “Growing up in Utah, my nephew who was a couple years younger than me, we would go down into our basement and my dad had some old mono tape decks and microphone and we would just pretend we were DJ’s and would talk like we were on the air.” Henderson recalls.
Getting His Podcast Started in 2005
In August 2005, Wayne finally got the itch to start podcasting after his wife found an article about it in a local newspaper. He started with a show called Tuning In with Wayne Henderson and wow nine years later, Wayne’s involved in over 5 podcasts. That’s a lot of podcasts to be producing each and every week, how does Wayne have time to eat? “It’s all done on the run and fortunately having a co-host like Troy Heinritz helps to balance out the workload. I don’t have to do everything for these TV show podcasts.” says Henderson.
