Yes I’m back after a brief hiatus. My schedule got a little overwhelmed there and so START had to take a back seat for a bit. But now that I’m back, I’ll be posting episodes much more frequently.
I just got back from an amazing trip to Las Vegas where I attended the New Media Expo (formerly Blogworld) and The Podcast Awards which were held at the Rio All Suites and Resort Casino. I had an absolute blast meeting fellow podcasters who have goals and aspirations just like I do. It really is incredible to hear some of the stories from others. How they got started podcasting, where they are at in their podcasting careers at the moment, where they hope to be. It really is inspiring.
Uploading Your First Audio File
Now that we’ve saved our audio, what do we need to do with it?
You have to upload your audio file to a server. If you’re running a free site or blog like Blogger/Blogspot, you can upload your audio file at Archive.org.
If you’re running a self hosted WordPress Blog, like most podcasters are, you can create an MP3 folder on your server and place your files there. There are risks to this so be careful. In order to upload the file to your server you’re going to need an FTP program of some kind, I use FileZilla which is free and simple to setup and use.
Upload your audio and copy the URL where the audio file is being stored and paste that link into your blog post. If you’re not using WordPress, simply paste the link into you blog post. If you’re using WordPress the easiest way to post your podcast is to download the PowerPress plugin for WordPress. Once you’ve done that, start typing up your show notes in a post, then scroll down to the bottom and in the PowerPress section, place the URL to your file in the mp3 file field. Hit Validate and boom you’re ready to publish your post.
Make sure when you’re doing your show notes you include tags as well. Once your notes and your links are all ready to go, hit save OR publish and bam you’ve got your self a podcast!
Now that you have a podcast, you’re going to want to get the word out about it. Next week I’ll show you which podcast platforms you’re going to want to be on and which is the easiest way to get them submitted to the various Stores/Libraries etc.

New Media Expo
In Vegas I had a chance to meet some amazing people in the podcast world. Some of them I mention in this episode. One person I met in particular I was incredibly stoked to talk to. Mike Russell and his wife made the trek all the way from the UK. Mike does a fantastic job with the Music Radio Creative Podcast and has a TON of Youtube videos on the web if you’re interested in learning Adobe Audition like I am I suggest you check them out. This episode was in fact edited and produced using Audition. It was my first attempt at creating an episode with Audition and I’ll be sure to give my review next week in Episode 6.
I also met Daniel Hayes who has one of the best podcast studios I’ve ever seen built AND its in his SHED! That’s right he build his studio from the ground up in his backyard in San Antonio and he calls it his “Shedquarters”. Daniel just recently got his start in podcasting in November. The show he hosts along with his wife Vanessa is called “Simple Life Together” and its already well on its way to big success!
He’s Relentless
A few months ago after my first appearance on the Podcasters Roundtable I had the fortune of making contact with Corey Fineran who hosts Ivy Envy, a Chicago Cubs podcast. At the time I had NO IDEA he was also running his own podcast network much like me. Corey is the founder and producer of all of the shows on the Relentless Podcast Network and spent 5 days with me in Las Vegas. Corey fills us in on some of the things he learned while at NMX and what he plans to implement into his podcasting in 2013.
